St. John’s Mental Hospital/Asylum in Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln, England (via flickr)
The hospital opened in 1852. It was built in Italian style by the architects Hamilton and Thomas Percy. It had 300 patients in the beginning but soon expanded to many more and the hospital was enlarged.
The hospital closed down in 1990 and was sold a few years later to a property developer who has constructed nearly 1,000 new houses in the village. The original hospital buildings themselves are classified as Grade III listed buildings and are protected from demolition. During the redevelopment of the hospital site, a number of these protected buildings were refurbished and converted into flats and offices.

Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio
The Ohio State Reformatory is a prison built between 1886 and 1910 and remained in full operation until 1972 once the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility was opened. The facility was completely closed down in 1990. Part of the grounds and support buildings however, including the outer wall have been demolished since the closing. In 1995, the “Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society” was formed. They have turned the prison into a museum and conduct tours to help fund grounds rehabilitation projects and currently work to stabilize the buildings against further deterioration. The facility still holds the largest free standing cell block in the world at six tiers high.
The prison gained fame when it served as Shawshank State Prison in the 1994 movie The Shawshank Redemption starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. It was also featured in many other productions, even before its closing.

Château du Lac in northern France (photograph by Alain Dejeaifve)
In the north of France, a more specific location could not be found on the web, remains a 16th century castle, one of the few reminders of that time in the region. Built on the ruins of a castle of the 13th century, this castle is a tasty mixture of Renaissance architecture extended by more common buildings. The castle is surrounded by a large wooded park entirely on a small hill overlooking the village, the valley and a small lake. It is attracting interest because it is of significant size and is an almost unique architectural example.
Château du Lac was built in 1314 and suffered from many evils since then. It literally survived and lingered through time. Victim of fire, military occupation and now sheer abandonment, it is remaining feebly alive in an advanced decaying state…
It has been left behind by its current owners, leaving it to decay. With no restoration for several decades, the roof begins to collapse and the castle has slowly deteriorated into its current state.

Henryton State Hospital in Marriottsville, Maryland
Henryton State Hospital is a now-closed hospital complex in Marriottsville. It was established as a facility to treat African Americans suffering from tuberculosis. This was one of the first such facilities in Maryland erected to provide African Americans with the same level of treatment as whites.
The original complex opened in 1922. In the 1930’s and 40’s more buildings were added to the complex as there were more and more tubercular patients but soon after that the tuberculosis rates dropped. In 1963 the Department of Health decided to stop operating tuberculosis and begin with treating severely and profoundly retarded ambulatory (Maryland) residents ages eighteen and over. Contrary to popular belief, those were not the criminally insane. But those also dropped in the 1980’s. The entire complex was closed in 1985.
After its closing the Henryton State Hospital complex has been many times the victim of vandalism and arson, even though trespassing is forbidden on the property. The state of Maryland spends a large amount of money to maintain the property minimally and occasionally patrol, and it is an expense that the state seems eager to be rid of.
